Mayor defends Chief Fire officer
|
Ilfracombe Mayor John Swan has gone on record to “put straight” exactly what was said at the public meeting held at Ilfracombe Junior School last Wednesday (January 2nd) after a media report suggested that comments made at the meeting by Chief Fire Officer Paul Young could lead to calls for his resignation.
The report, by a regional daily newspaper, was taken up by other papers in the area and suggested that the high ranking officer had stated that he “had been wrong” and that his proposals for Ilfracombe would “endanger lives”.

Ilfracombe Clean-up Campaign 2008.
|
john.swan writes "At a recent Litter meeting chaired by the Mayor, local and district councillors agreed to promote an initiative to instigate a major clean up of the town in time for next season. It is hoped that the Landmark would be the NDDC flagship contribution and steps will be taken to try to get everyone in the Town on board. The initiative proposals include the Dog Trust, Graffiti, (with the help of the Probation Service), a 'lanes and footpaths' tidy and paint, Street furniture cleaning and painting and Beach cleaning. The initiative will attempt to bring together a number of groups who undertake this kind of work in a co-ordinated push to gain a strong visible benefit. If YOU would be prepared to help, contact us with your details. It could be as simple as a pledge to tidy up your garden! Please help! (windmill winner)

Having viewed the video about the dearth of youth facilities in the town, Ilfracombe Round Table decided to do something about it. £250 was allocated by Ilfracombe Round Table, with further funding of £250 from Ilfracombe Rotary club, and £200 from the Town Council. The Friday Night Project, as it is known, was the idea of Councillor and Round Tabler Paul Crabb, who together with Round Tablers Joel and Leo Cooper made the idea reality. We're famous! ...For the wrong reasons! Since late 2006, a phenomenon called a 'spam-bot' has been plaguing internet forum sites. Our forum was no exception, and messages were posted with links to adult materials and Viagra adverts. We've rewritten some of the forum files, to try and prevent it from happening again, although nothing is 100% safe! For some reason which we don't understand, of all the community sites suffering this onslaught, our site was the one singled out by the Sun. The article was innaccurate in that there was never any 'Porn on Council website', nothing improper was hosted here at all, rather there was a message which contained links to other adult sites. We have left one of the 'cleaner' messages in the forum (with the links disabled!) for you to see an example of what we suffered. One important factor in deciding whether to keep the forums or not, is the amount of genuine community use they receive. If you agree with us that a genuine open debate forum is useful, then please use them. If they remain virtually unused, and we get spammed again, they will be removed, possibly forever.

Moves are afoot to change the parking arrangements in the town. The study is far reaching and includes an option to change management of the street parking from the traffic wardens to the NDDC car parks team. If the NDDC issue the tickets, and receive the income from them, then it's likely that parking will be much more rigidly enforced. What do YOU think? Take a moment to click on the 'comments' link below, and vote on how you feel.

News on the office redevelopment.
|
crabbtrux writes "An update on the latest news. The building now has an official NEW NAME!! It will be re-christened 'THE ILFRACOMBE CENTRE' when it reopens in 2008. Because of slight delays in minor changes to the plans, the building is now scheduled to close on March 30th, when the council facilities will relocate to the Lantern Centre for approximately 12 months. The new centre is shceduled to reopen in May 2008, with the help of a member of the public, drawn from the list of people who suggested the winning name. "
